Power Breakfast: Green Almond Smoothie

by Natalie on December 4, 2013

Have you tried a green smoothie for breakfast? It’s a fantastic way to start your day.

This is a really good one. I know it looks very, um…well, green, but I promise that it tastes good.

I got the bones of this recipe from Kris Carr’s Crazy, Sexy, Kitchen cookbook. She has several awesome smoothie and juice recipes in her cookbook. I made a few small changes to the original recipe. I cut down on the almond milk, used less kale, and added some more berries.

If you’re trying to improve your health and/or lose weight, breakfast is THE place to start. This is one of those recommendations that you have probably heard over and over, but it is true. Getting healthier can really be this simple. A healthy breakfast sets the bar high for the rest of your day. For most people it’s a keystone habit. According to author Charles Duhigg, in his book, The Power of Habit, keystone habits initiate other habits effortlessly. Sort of like a domino effect. So eating a healthy breakfast may cause you to take part in other healthy actions without you even knowing!

Green Almond Smoothie Recipe*

serves 2

  • 2 cups unsweetened almond milk (I like Silk or Whole Foods 365)
  • 1 cup filtered water
  • 1 cup frozen berries
  • 1/2 cup frozen mango
  • 2 tablespoons raw almond butter
  • sprinkle of cinnamon
  • 1 large kale leaf (rib removed)
  • 1 large handful of spinach

Place all ingredients in a high speed blender and blend until well combined. Enjoy!

I usually add a scoop of Warrior Blend, Natural flavored protein powder, for a protein boost. The almond butter and greens provide a small amount of protein, but I find that I need more to keep me fueled till lunch.

*slightly adapted from Kris Carr’s Crazy, Sexy, Kitchen cookbook.
