My 2014 Health & Wellness Goals

Around this time of year, I enjoying taking time to reflect on my life. I like thinking about all the highlights of the past year, and dreaming about how I would like my next year to go. It always amazes me how much can change in one year. I have really tried to be more conscious of goal setting and planning because life moves very quickly.

I try to give some time to think about all areas of my life including health, relationships, emotional, character, spiritual, parenting, financial, career, and overall quality of life.  The first area I usually attack is health and wellness. I truly believe that if you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything.

I won’t bore you with listing out goals for every area of my life, but I thought it would be fun to post my health goals for the upcoming year. This is the first time I will have ever shared them!

I sort of have a love/hate relationship with goal setting. It’s hard for me to get to it, but once I sit down, I find that I love it. This year, I felt inspired after watching this video from Marie Forleo and Danielle LaPorte. Instead of just sitting down and setting goals, Danielle suggests thinking about how you want to feel first.

Using this method, I came up with 2 core feelings that I want to achieve in the area of health and wellness. They are: 1) energized and 2) luminous. These words are the driving force for the specific goals I came up with.

My 2014 Health and Wellness Goals:

  1. Switch to 100% all natural skin care and makeup products. I plan to use the EWG Skin Deep database to choose only those products that fall in the low hazard range. I am interested in trying Josie Maran’s makeup line.
  2. Optimize my thyroid function. I recently found out that I have a mild case of Hashimoto’s hypothyroid. Super common, but if left untreated, it will lead to extreme fatigue and all sorts of unpleasant symptoms. The thyroid is such an important gland!
  3. Prioritize sleep by getting 8 hours on most nights. Sometimes I am tempted to sacrifice sleep so I can get things done, but it is always at the expense of how rotten I feel the next day.
  4. Avoid coffee, even decaf. I just don’t feel good when I drink coffee, so I am finally putting my foot down and making the decision to avoid it. I am not a big coffee drinker, but sometimes I will have it for fun (I like the taste). I plan to drink tea instead. I always feel great when I drink tea or yerba mate.
  5. Do a full length yoga class 1 x per week. Since having a child, my yoga practice has really suffered. Yoga makes me feel great, so I would like to get more of it in my life. I plan to take a class on the weekends when my husband can be with our girl.
  6. Re-instate a morning routine of 5 sun salutations, tea, journal, and shower. This morning routine starts my day off on the right foot. In order to make this happen, I need to get up an hour earlier! Oy!
  7. Visit my YMCA 3 x per week for 20 minutes. My goal is to do one cardio session and 2 weight sessions.
  8. Limit alcohol to special occasions. I’ve never been a big drinker, but I enjoy a nice beverage every now and again. My body does not tolerate alcohol at all. Even small amounts make me feel hungover!
  9. Perfect my dinner meal plan. Earlier in the year, my husband and I started a dinner template. We picked 10 or so recipes that we adore and decided to rotate those every two weeks. This took all the guessing out of dinner and made shopping a breeze. We got out of this habit and it has made things a little more frenzied.
