A Different Message For Breast Cancer Awareness Month

by Natalie on October 14, 2011

You may find it odd to hear that I wasn’t sure what  to write about for breast cancer awareness month.

At first I thought I would write a piece about current breast cancer statistics. For some reason that just didn’t feel right. When I was researching the numbers all I kept thinking about were the actual women I know that have been affected by the disease. The next thought that popped into my head was how all of these women are alive and well. That thought was followed by a feeling of great gratitude.

So instead of rattling off statistics, tips or facts, I want to use this awareness month to send a brief message. Thank you to all the researchers and health care professionals who work to improve breast cancer outcomes. It is because of your work that these wonderful women – especially my mom- are still with us in this life.

For all the organizations who research the impact of a healthy lifestyle on cancer prevention. Especially the American Institute for Cancer Research. I appreciate and value your work so much. Thank you for proving to us that WE can play the biggest role in our health.

And I cannot forget the important organizations that show young women how to be proactive about their breast health – especially Bright Pink and Boarding For Breast Cancer. Thank you for raising awareness about prevention and doing it in such a cool way!

Though we still have a long way to go in the areas of breast cancer prevention, detection and treatment, I can’t help but be thankful for how far we’ve come.

What’s on your mind this breast cancer awareness month?
