5 Common (and inexpensive!) Foods that Lower Breast Cancer Risk

Some of the best breast cancer fighting foods may already be in your home kitchen! These common foods are often overshadowed by superfoods from far off places. Though they are common, they rank as some of the best foods you can eat for breast cancer prevention.

1. Cabbage

Cabbage is high in plant chemicals known as glucosinolates. These important phytochemicals can help our bodies detoxify cancer-causing substances, keep estrogen levels in balance, and stop cancerous cells from growing. Cabbage can add great texture to your meals. When raw, it adds a nice fresh crunch. Cooked, it is silky and warm. Try using raw cabbage as a topping on fish tacos. Cooked cabbage is great in soups.

2. Carrots

Carrots contain high levels of the powerful plant chemicals called carotentoids. Carotenoids can help prevent breast cancer by stopping the growth of cancer cells and by improving our immune system. To get more carrots in your diet, try adding shreds to your salads. Shreds can be created by using a peeler or grater.

3. Spinach

Spinach is high in folate, a vitamin used in the creation and repair of DNA. Damage to your DNA is a reason many of us develop cancer. Getting the right amount of folate will help ensure that any DNA damage is successfully repaired. Spinach is great for salads and fresh juices. Another easy way to add spinach to your diet is by tossing a large handful into your morning smoothie. You won’t even taste it!

4. Sardines 

Sardines are high in Omega-3 fats, yet low in environmental contaminants such as mercury and PCBs. Omega-3 fats help lower breast cancer risk by reducing any unnecessary inflammation in your body. Inflammation can be caused by several things including illness, stress, over-exercise, pollution, and obesity. Sardines make a great snack on whole grain crackers or toast.

5. Black Beans

Black beans are an excellent source of fiber, a nutrient necessary for breast cancer prevention. Fiber helps our bodies get rid of unnecessary estrogen. After estrogen has performed its function, we want it to leave our body. Excess of estrogen can lead to breast cancer. The dark hue of black beans is an indication they contain high levels of antioxidants – another reason they can help fight breast cancer.
